From the recording Sitting On A Railing
Lyrics
They were sitting on a railing
Sharing a cigarette
Showing off their humour
Like two children who just met
And he wondered where she went at night
Where it was that she lived
As she spoke of her grand piano
And the music that she did
So he played her a song
He wrote for her on his guitar
As his voice echoed the foyer
She knew that he wanted her
That night he was drinking
And for that he was quite known
When he got up on that stage
No-one could see he was alone
So he watched her cross the street
As she pretended she couldn't see
That he wanted her to be with him
She said Nah you'll just screw around with me
And that night he got really drunk
And sang for the one
Sang with his ex lover
Till the rising of the sun
It was then that he reproached her
Waited for her to ask him why
But she didn't say a thing
She just vanished from his side
And he tried not to show it
But inside him he was caught
In the tide of his longing
In the pride of his thought
And as she had dreams of the times they touched
Twist and turn inside her head
He was debating whether to call her
Whether he'd lose it if he said
What on earth can I do?
What on earth can I be?
I wanna steal you from yourself
Because you steal me from me
Well the nights grew cold as winter fell
And he slowly forgot
She travelled on to some place else
To find somewhere to belong
And one day he heard a piano play
A reminiscent song
A voice echoed in the icy wind
But he couldn't tell where it came from
They were sitting on a railing
Sharing a cigarette
Showing off their humour
Like two children who just met
And he wondered where she went at night
Where it was that she lived
As she spoke of her grand piano
And the music that she did
